Governments love sending people off to war while they stay in the safety of their luxury accommodations back home. While governments like to reward people with medals and other trinkets to make them feel good about risking their lives for dubious reasons, it’s nice to know that nations have also taken time to honor cats during war time.

During the Crimean War, one cat led starving troops to hidden caches of food that retreating soldiers had buried. Another cat served on a British aircraft carrier during the war as the captain’s personal companion. No word on whether this cat imparted strategic wisdom to the captain but the cat survived the war and likely got a treat in return.

The next time there’s another war, you can be sure humans will treat each other miserably, but hopefully the cats will come out of each war unscathed and in better condition than before.
