Feral cats are often called a form of ecological pollution due to their killing of 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals every year in the US alone. While some communities want to eliminate feral cats altogether, animal rights activists have another idea. Rather than eliminate the feral cats, why not put them to work as rodent hunters?
The Working Cats Program, billed as an “environmentally-safe alternative to poisonous pest controls,” provides between two and four cats to the owners of warehouses, farms, and ranches, who are instructed to continue to provide them with a supplemental diet of cat food. For the cheap cost of cat food, the farmers and ranchers get a rodent-free warehouse so that way everyone wins.
