Every cat owner can tell you why having a cat around makes them feel better, but what they may not know is that cats can physically improve your health as well. A large and lengthy study published in 2009 in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Neurology focused specifically on the effect of cat ownership on heart attack and stroke victims. The study followed 14,404 people for 20 years, and found that both past and current cat owners were significantly more likely to survive a heart attack than those who never owned cats.

If you want to protect yourself from a heart attack, get yourself a cat. Then you may not suffer from a heart attack but you may suffer from frustration, annoyance, and sleeplessness caused by your cat running around your house while you’re trying to get something done. Then again, that may be a small price to pay for avoiding a heart attack.
