Los Angeles recently hosted CatCon, their first convention just for cat lovers. More than 10,000 people crowded into a downtown convention hall to shop for cat-centric merchandise (for people, mostly), have their pictures taken with celebrity Internet cats (such as Lil Bub), and attend cat-focused panels (“Goodbye Dowdy, Hello Gorgeous: Debunking the Cat Lady Myth”).
“My goal is to break down the stereotype of the weird cat person,” said Susan Michals, a cable television producer who organized CatCon in her spare time. “There is a whole world of cat lovers out there. We’re not all a bunch of ‘Grey Gardens’ Miss Havishams.”
If you wanted to hang around other cat lovers, look at cats, and learn more about caring for a cat, wait until next year’s CatCon. If CatCon continues proving popular, expect more CatCon’s to start popping up in other cities in the near future.
