In most places, you need to buy a license for your dog, but not for a cat. Yet in Canada, apparently you do need to buy a license for your cat. Failure to buy one can result in a fine and possibly jail time.
That’s exactly what’s happening with Dan Smith, 65,who was found guilty last summer of not having a licence for a cat, as required under municipal bylaw.
Smith, however, says that “Winnie the cat” isn’t his, it’s feral anyway, and he doesn’t even live in Gatineau. Yet because he refuses to pay the fines levied against him, he could risk going to jail over a cat he doesn’t even own.
Now if cats could only round up all the people they don’t like, perhaps this law would make more sense. Until then, you can read more about this poor man’s problems with a cat license by clicking here.
