In most cases, cats live 10 -15 years. While this may seem short, it can feel much longer when you’re busy cleaning up hairballs, litter boxes, and torn drapes and couches. Although the average cat lives around a decade, Nutmeg the cat is on the verge of becoming the oldest cat in the world at 31 years old.

Nutmeg’s owners say the secret to their cat’s long life is being spoilt rotten. They regularly feed him treats such as tuna, cream and hot roast chicken.

Ian, 66, said: “Nutmeg has been very well cared for. He has his own room in the house. He is part of the family. We always say we are his humans, rather than he is our cat.”
