While dogs often work in war environments as sentries or bomb-sniffing sensors, cats usually stay somewhere safe where they can enjoy life while avoiding most of the horrors of war around them. Cats seem to have a mystical quality about them that allows them to survive in any situation, even war.

One cat named Oscar, but later nickname Unsinkable Sam led a strangely charmed life. Oscar began as a car on the German battleship Bismarck. When the British sank the Bismarck, the British destroyer Cossack rescued Oscar as he floated by on a board.

When the Cossack sank, Oscar survived and went on board the aircraft carrier Ark Royal. A German U-boat torpedoed and sank the Ark Royal, but Oscar clung to a floating board and was rescued. When found, he was “angry but quite unharmed”, according to a history of the Ark Royal.
