If a space alien were to arrive on this planet, they might conclude that humans created the Internet solely to share pictures and videos of cats. Although the Internet has made it easy to share pictures and videos of cats, people have been long fascinated with felines before the Internet even existed.

The Smithsonian museum is now displaying an exhibit called “Before Internet Cats: Feline Finds from the Archives of American Art.” In this exhibit you can see early paintings and photographs that show people we’re fascinated by cats long before the Internet even existed. The only difference is that oil paintings can’t accurately capture a cat freaking out after seeing a cucumber placed next to it.
