Most people think of robots are metallic contraptions that may be good for bluntly hitting or smashing items, but not sensitive enough to avoid breaking an egg if it tries to hold it. That’s why a new field of “soft robotics” is emerging where robots are gentle enough to touch items without harming them, such as petting a cat.

The goal of this latest soft robot, dubbed Gamer, is to make a consumer-friendly robot for the public. When people realize that robots can be useful around the house and careful enough not to hurt anything they touch, they’ll be more likely to accept more robots in the future.
