Tangier Island, Virginia may be one of the most isolated areas along the East coast. Helen Woods, 42, a flight instructor who flies regularly to the island as part of her work with the annual holly run, a long-running tradition in which pilots fly boughs of holly to Tangier in time for Christmas, says the island may hold less than 500 people but more than 500 cats.

With so many feral cats roaming the island, Woods sent out a plea to fellow pilots, asking them if they could airlift some cats back to the mainland and bring cat food too. This air lift can bring cats to shelter where they can be adopted and find a good home.

If you thought the Berlin air lift was a historical occasion, you might want to include the Tangier Island air lift as another momentous moment in history.
