Microchips have been proven to be a safe and effective way to help reunite lost cats with their owners. While microchipping has always been voluntary, pet owner Liam Smith, has started a petition to make cat microchipping compulsory.

He said: “I was inspired to start this petition because I couldn’t believe all dogs have to be microchipped by law, but cats don’t. If a cat gets lost or injured and hasn’t been microchipped, it makes it much harder for vets and animal welfare charities to reunite it with its owner.”

Whether microchipping becomes compulsory or not, it’s a good idea to get your cat microchipped now. For most people, they’ll never need to use this microchip but in that rare time when you’re separated from your cat, a microchip might be the only way of bringing your cat back to you wherever it might be.
