In most places, you can let your cat roam freely in the neighborhood. However, if you happen to live in Springfield, Illinois, you may be surprised to find it’s against the law to let you cat outside without a leash.

In fact, people can legally call animal control to pick up your cat if it’s in their yard. Then you’ll have to pay a fine to get your cat back. If you want your cat outside, you’ll have to put it on a leash.

Clinic Manager at Animal Protective League, Sarah Moore said, “There are reasons for the leash law. So, for starters its every dangerous to have your cat roaming around by itself. It could encounter a car or a dog. It could be picked up by someone with bad intentions, it could get stolen or lost.”
