More than 3,000 people living on the 140-square-mile island of Lana’i, which is located approximately nine miles away from Maui, Hawaii’s second-largest island. Less than two miles away from the island’s airport is a special sanctuary that sits on about three acres of land. What makes this sanctuary special is that it protects and house over 600 cats.

So many cats consume about 75 pounds of cat food a day, which must be shipped in weekly, at a cost of about $35,000 a year. Fortunately, donations from guests and cat lovers around the world help pay the bills. Last year alone, over 10,000 people visited Hawaii’s cat sanctuary from places as far away as Japan, Australia and India.

If you thought Hawaii is a paradise, imagine what it must be like to live there for free as a cat in a protected sanctuary.
