Cats are affectionate creatures, but they may only like being held a certain way. One method is called the “football carry” which makes your cat look like a football. Believe it or not, this can actually be comfortable for your cat (although it might not look comfortable for you or the cat).
Strangely, one of the best ways to carry a cat involves squishing it slightly. This helps a cat feel secure and also keeps a cat from being able to claw you to death in case it freaks out at the last minute over nothing.
