When Joan Bowell and her husband Richard posted on offer for a cat care taker on a Greek island, complete with a salary, she asked for others to share the post “far and wide”. The ad went viral and wound up attracting 35,000 applications.

Joan and Richard arrived in Greece 20 years ago and were appalled at the way cats were treated. That’s why they started their cat sanctuary to give cats a safe place to thrive. Now the island of Syros has an estimated 25,000 people but 3,000 stray cats.

Joan and Richard had to enlist five volunteers to help them sort through the 35,000 applicants. Hopefully they’ll find the best person for the job and allow the cats to continue living a peaceful life on a Greek island.
