Caterpillar Inc. makes earth moving equipment such as bulldozers and mechanical shovels, but many people don’t realize that they’ve trademarked the term “CAT”. To protect their trademark, Caterpillar is now suing a Santa Cruz coffee shop called Cat & Cloud Coffee.
Apparently Caterpillar wants the coffee shop to stop using the word “cat” in its line of apparel in case anyone gets confused between a Caterpillar bulldozer and a Cat & Cloud Coffee T-shirt. If Caterpillar should emerge victorious in this lawsuit, perhaps all cat owners will have to refer to their felines using another word as well.
