If you want a cat, you can get a variety of different types. Most cats are the traditional short hair cats while some have no hair at all. On the other extreme, there are a handful of long-haired cats that are specially adapted for cold weather.
The Maine Coon is especially noted for its large size that can weigh up to 18 pounds. Despite their large size, Maine Coon cats and their related long-haired siblings generally have a docile temperament, which makes them perfect for children. Just be aware that long-haired cats can shed enough that you might be tempted to knit their fur into mittens or sweaters.
