Kittens are still learning to deal with the world so when one kitten happened to spot its own reflection in a mirror, it froze. Apparently the kitten wasn’t sure who that other cat was looking back at it, despite the fact that it looked and moved exactly the same.
Whether cats can recognize themselves in reflections or not is a debate that nobody will be able to resolve for certain unless we can get cats to tell us what they see. Until then, we can all enjoy watching cats stare at themselves in a mirror and wonder if they know what they’re looking at.
