The Central Intelligence Agency has always been interested in developing new ways to spy on people, yet one of their oddest attempts was called Operation Acoustic Kitty. CIA technicians basically sedated a live cat, placed a microphone in its ear canal and ran a wire under its skin to its tail, turning its tail into a broadcasting antenna.

The idea was that the wired kitty would wander next to high-ranking Soviet personnel and allow CIA operatives to eavesdrop on their conversations. After wiring up their first cat, they let it loose near two men sitting on a bench. Unfortunately, the cat wandered into the street and got promptly run over by a taxi, which put an end to the CIA’s further attempts for continuing Operation Acoustic Kitty.
