When police stopped a man driving a white Toyota Highlander that had no license plates, they quickly discovered that the car had been stolen. That’s when the man jumped to his feet and ran into a building where he threatened to jump out a window and kill himself.
Police hostage negotiators spent three hours trying to talk the man off the ledge without success. Then the man’s relatives showed up with his cat. The police quickly brought the man’s cat so he could see it and within 45 minutes, the cat had helped the man surrender to the police.
“Using the cat was ingenious,” said Officer Albie Esparza, a police spokesman. “Never underestimate the power of the love between people and their pets. I think it was great to think outside the box like the officers did. It made enough of an impact on this person to bring him down and come to his senses.”
