Like many places, Israel suffers from a large feral cat population. Sadly, many of these feral cats get hurt or sick while decimating wildlife. While the most humane solution has been to catch feral cats and sterilize them so they can’t breed, Israel’s Agriculture Minister, Uri Ariel, came up with an odd solution, which is to transfer all the feral cats to another country.
Israeli animal rights activists are up in arms over this ludicrous proposal, which sounds no different than Donald Trump’s solution of getting rid of illegal immigrants by deporting all of them back to another country, even if they were born in America.
While politicians embrace simplistic solutions for complex problems, the rest of us can look for simple, humane, and rational solutions to complex problems instead. Let’s hope the Israeli feral cat population can be humanely managed without causing additional problems in a country constantly surrounded by problems everyday.
