In 21 countries around the world, declawing a cat is illegal. Yet it’s still legal in the United States. Most people recognize declawing as inhumane, so rather than declaw a cat, consider more humane alternatives.

First, keep your cat’s claws trimmed so they can’t cause too much damage. Second, place sticky tape on objects that you don’t want a cat to claw. That will hopefully discourage the cat from clawing that item in the first place.

Third, provide plenty of suitable scratching alternatives such as posts or pads that can allow your cat to safely satisfy the scratching instinct without destroying valuable furniture in the process. By avoiding declawing, you can keep your furniture and your cat safe.
