Many people agree that dogs are intelligent creatures, capable of feeling emotions and figuring out problems. Yet many people believe that cats don’t have those same qualities despite the fact that cats can find someone else to take care of them, feed them, and provide health care for them while the cats ignore the humans altogether.

Now Japanese scientists say cats are as good as dogs at certain memory tests. A study – involving 49 domestic cats – shows felines can recall memories of pleasant experiences, such as eating a favourite snack. Remembering a specific event known as episodic memory.

Saho Takagi, a psychologist at Kyoto University, said, “Episodic memory is viewed as being related to introspective function of the mind; our study may imply a type of consciousness in cats.”

If you think cats aren’t smart, chances are good it’s because your cat is clearly outsmarting you already.
