World War I is now just remembered in history books, but what many people don’t realize is that cats played an important role in keeping morale up on the front lines. An estimated 500,000 cats were dispatched to the trenches to kill rats and mice.

In keeping with tradition, many Navy ships kept a cat to hunt down rodents as well. So the next time you read about World War I, just remember that the true heroes of that war were often cats.

Cats don’t want to fight. After all, cats benefit by controlling humans so its in the cats’ best interests to keep as many humans alive as possible to subjugate them all under the cat’s rule.
