Eileen Shutts used to live near Westbrook High School where her cat, Simba, liked to wander the halls of the high school. Shutts said Simba would stay home but when the family went out to work, Simba would get restless and wander to the nearby high school where he would sit next to students doing their homework or curl up in his own chair in the guidance office.

“He had a calmness to him,” Shutts said. “He liked being petted and scratched. The guidance people told me that seemed to be really good for kids.”

Unfortunately at the age of 21, Simba passed away. Despite his loss, high school staff and students still remember Simba fondly. After all, how many other schools can you learn while in the calming presence of a cat?
