In wartime, armies often use dogs as sentries to guard bases or to sniff out explosives. However, cats have been used in wartime as well, often braving wartime conditions just to get a good meal.

During the World War Two battle of Stalingrad, the Russians used a cat named Mourka to carry messages about German positions fromĀ a group of Russian scouts back to their headquarters. He was probably well rewarded for his efforts and devotion to duty, as there was a kitchen in the HQ building.

In World War One, the British reportedly used cats in their trenches to catch mice and also serve as living poison gas detectors. So the next time you might get caught in a war, be sure to bring a cat with you. It could save your life.
