Many cats are friendly but some cats are skittish around strangers or just people in general. For those types of cats, you can still get them to like you if you practice certain types of behavior that lets a cat know you’re not a threat.

First, don’t stare at a cat. Cats interpret staring as a predator eyeing its prey. Instead, blink calmly and slowly and avert your eyes so the cat knows you’re not stalking it. Also don’t thrust your hand out to the cat since that looks threatening. Instead, dangling your finger in front of the cat so it can lean over and sniff it if it chooses.

No matter how skittish a cat might be, you can change your behavior to put the cat at ease. Now you just have to wonder why you’re going through so much trouble to keep a cat calm when your own life might be in complete turmoil.
