Native to northern Africa and southwestern and central Asia, sand kittens are a unique breed of cat that most people in America never get to see. Fortunately in Palm Desert, California, four sand kittens were recently born in  The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. The cats have thick fur to protect them from sand, cold and heat.

“This is a historic birth for us,” RoxAnna Breitigan, director of animal care, said in a news release. “Due to their very elusive nature and excellent desert camouflage, very little is known about sand cats, including their populations in the wild. We are proud to be participating in species conservation efforts that support these special felines.”
