The Japanese love cats. Walk into any Japanese store or restaurant and you’re sure to see a lucky cat waving you from the doorway. Despite loving cats so much, the Japanese also fear cats. Their mythology involves monstrous, supernatural cats that eat people and refuse to use a litter box.

Many Japanese myths depict cats are demonic shape-shifters, which as any cat owner will tell you is completely accurate. Just like any cat owner, the Japanese love and hate cats because they’re such adorable monsters, and that’s something that never changes no matter which culture embraces cats.
