Cats love to scratch everything in sight, usually the most valuable piece of furniture in the house. While scratching posts can supposedly lure a cat away from furniture, a better solution might be to trim your cat’s nails on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, trimming a cat’s nails can be a death-defying experience if you’re not careful. Fortunately, Ph.D. student Jennifer Link, who is a researcher at the UC Davis Animal Welfare Epi Lab, has developed a protocol. First, touch the cat’s legs first, then the paws. If the cat doesn’t freak out, then try trimming a single nail.

Then again, it’s never too late to let the veterinarian trim your cat’s nails so your cat doesn’t claw your arm apart.
