The Japanese company Sanrio first created Hello Kitty in 1974. A year later, her image, including her signature red bow, was introduced on a children’s coin purse. That started the Hello Kitty craze that soon branched out into toys, clothing, and other merchandise.

Hello Kitty’s full name is Kitty White and amazingly, the creator says Hello Kitty is actually a girl, not a cat, despite the ears and whiskers. Whether a girl or a cat, Hello Kitty remains one of the most popular characters ever.
