In Istanbul, Turkey, Tombili was famously known as a mellow cat who lounged around the streets. “Tombili was a freely living cat, like most cats in Turkey,” Batu Aksoy, one of the founders of the Anatolian Cat Project, said. “The community took care of her.”

When Tombili passed away in August, someone put up a poster showing Tombili’s picture as a memorial, but a paper poster was too temporary. That’s why the community decided the best way to remember Tombili was with a statue.
