It’s always sad when someone passes away, but it’s especially newsworthy when it happens to be a prominent politician. In the Alaskan town of Talkeetna, their mayor recently passed away at the ripe old age of twenty. If this sounds odd, you have to realize that Stubbs the mayor was a cat.

Talkeetna, a town with a population of about 900, elected the yellow cat mayor in a write-in campaign in 1998. Mayor Stubbs, who liked to drink water and catnip from a margarita glass, quickly became a tourist attraction. Surprisingly, there is no human mayor for the town so Stubbs could have ruled with an iron paw with no checks and balances to stop him.

Fortunately, Mayor Stubbs turned out to be a benevolent leader. Best of all, Mayor Stubbs left behind several kittens who are currently jockeying for position to take over as mayor when they’re old enough.
