Although cats meow, they usually don’t meow at each other. When cats communicate with other cats, they rub against each other. However, when cats communicate with humans, they meow, so meowing is a special language just for cat-to-human communication.

If a cat gives a short meow, that’s like a greeting such as “Hi!” If a cat gives multiple meows, that means your cat is happy to see you. However, if a cat gives a mid-pitch meow, that’s a plea for food or attention.

By learning to decipher meows, you can better understand your cat (even though your cat may still ignore you when you call it).
