Everyone likes to think their cats are smart, but you can often tell by how many different ways your cat finds to bend you to its will. The more ways your cat can dominate your life, the smarter it’s likely to be.

Since you can’t tell a cat’s intelligence through standard tests, you have to rely on understanding a cat’s intelligence through its behavior.  If your cat can respond to its name, tell the difference between your voice and a stranger’s voice, and can find a favorite toy behind a solid object, chances are good your kitty is pretty smart, according to feline behaviorist Kristyn Vitale, PhD, a cat researcher at Oregon State University’s Human-Animal Interaction Lab.
