Cats kill over 200 million birds a year just in Canada alone. That’s why Nature Canada launched its “Keep Cats Safe and Save Birds Lives” campaign, which is asking cat owners to make an online pledge not to let their cats roam free outdoors. For every cat kept indoors, that could save 16 birds a year.
Not only does Nature Canada hope to appeal to bird lovers, but also to cat lovers as well. That’s because outdoor cats run the risk of getting hit by cars or attacked by other animals. Nature Canada notes that the City of Toronto alone picked up 1,300 dead cats off its streets.
So if you love both cats and birds, keep your cat inside. You may spare both a bird’s life and a cat’s life, and both are valuable if you truly love animals.
