Lil Bub is one of the original internet cat celebrities. Besides merchandise licensing, Lil Bub’s latest venture these days is to donate her droppings in the name of science. The goal is to learn more about the bacteria floating around a cat’s animal’s digestive systems.
Phase Genomics, a Seattle-based biotechnology startup, is studying Lil Bub’s droppings to identify the cats’ microbiome, the name for all the bacteria that lives inside an animal’s gut.
The data will help scientists understand diseases like diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease and many other health problems, in both cats and humans, that are likely associated with the microbiome. Who knew cat droppings could be so valuable?
